Lionel Messi’s Argentina will be looking for their first Copa since 1993, an unfathomable amount of time considering the talent they’ve had at their disposal over the past 10 years. Colombia, Uruguay and Chile come into the tournament in inconsistent form of late but are hoping to save their best performances over June and July....

A 3-1 win over Atletico Tucuman in Sao Paulo on Wednesday was Palmeiras’ fourth victory in six Group 5 games. Yerry Mina put the Brazilian giants ahead in the 15th minute, completing a fine set-piece move. Still a chance of progressing, Atletico Tucuman levelled in the 56th minute through a Luis Rodriguez header. But Palmeiras restored their lead through Willian before former Bayern Munich and Brazil star Ze Roberto volleyed in a late sealer....

River Plate fans were the only ones celebrating in the end, both at home and in Spain, after the historic victory over fierce rival Boca Juniors in the twice-suspended final of the Copa Libertadores. River came from behind to beat the rival 3-1 in the second leg after extra time to win South America’s equivalent of the Champions League 5-3 on aggregate. One of the most anticipated matches in South American soccer finally came to a conclusion, nearly a month after the first leg was played in Argentina....

The goalkeeper said last week Barca should not be awarded the title if the season was unable to be finished due to the coronavirus pandemic. But LaLiga is aiming to finish its season and Quique Setien’s men hold a two-point lead over Madrid with 11 games to play. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were among the teams to post photos from the next phase of the Spanish top flight’s attempted return early on Monday. Following LaLiga’s coronavirus hiatus, players were allowed to resume individual work from May 4 as the country began to de-escalate its lockdown measures. Jurgen Klopp’s men had opened up a 25-point lead on closest challengers Manchester City when the season was brought to a halt by COVID-19 in March. On Saturday, Brighton’s confirmed number of cases rose to three in spite of strict health and safety regulations, with players largely isolating at home. According to a new graph published by Dr. Maria Danilychev, who practices in San Diego, COVID-19 has moved past accidents, chronic lung disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, flu and pneumonia, and kidney disease as the third most likely cause of death in the U.S. The graph uses data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the daily average cause of death and compares this with COVID-19 statistics from Worldometers....

“We are mixing into this epidemic the most lethal means for suicide that has ever been invented,” Dr. Eric Fleegler, a professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School and a pediatric emergency physician, told Newsweek. The pandemic and the economic and social havoc it unleashed in the country can trigger or contribute to mental distress, Fleegler wrote with two other authors in an essay published earlier this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine....

South Korea has had one of the largest outbreaks of the new coronavirus, and nearly 8,000 people have contracted the virus, which has killed 67 people in the country. The outbreak appears to be waning, though, and on Friday the KCDC reported that 177 additional people were pronounced recovered from the virus and that there were only 110 new cases. South Korea reported its first case on January 20, and in the two months since, 510 people have recovered and 7,402 remain in isolation....

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued elevated travel warnings to some of these countries, which are the latest hot spots to see a rapid spread of the virus in recent days. The H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel in Tenerife, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, was reported to be on lockdown on Tuesday after one of its guests, an Italian national had been diagnosed with the virus, Reuters reports....
